Gabon sits on the equator and behaves like it: the mercury rarely strays more than 5°C from 29°C (84°F) at midday or 23°C (73°F) after dark. Instead of summer and winter, you get two wet seasons and two dry ones. The big rains arrive between late February and May, pause in June-August, then roar back from October to early December. Humidity hovers around 70 % all year, so even the "dry" months feel steamy. But the difference between a 2 mm and a 200 mm month is the difference between a slick jungle path and a chocolate-milk river you simply can't cross. Loango's elephants, Lopé's mandrills and Libreville's Atlantic surf are all available year-round; the trick is choosing whether you want mud on your boots or sand between your toes.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach & Relaxation
June to early September, when rainfall drops to almost nothing and 26°C (79°F) sea breezes tame the humidity.
Cultural Exploration
Late December through January: short afternoon storms leave mornings clear for Libreville markets and village ceremonies, and holiday crowds thin after New Year.
Adventure & Hiking
Mid-June to August: forest trails firm up, wildlife clusters around shrinking waterholes, and the 27°C (81°F) highs are the coolest you'll feel in Gabon.
Budget Travel
Late March to May: downpours slash hotel occupancy and operators run "green-season" discounts, though you'll need patience when ferries cancel last-minute.

Heavy denim - takes days to dry. Drone over 1 kg - permits are expensive and forests swallow GPS signals. Binoculars over 10×42 - humidity fogs large lenses; 8×32 is plenty. Thick sleeping bag - lodges provide sheets, nights rarely drop below 21°C (70°F)
