The surrounding landscape is genuinely impressive - dense equatorial forest stretches in every direction, broken only by red dirt roads and the occasional clearing where local communities have carved out their existence. You'll find Oyem has a slower rhythm than the capital, with markets that actually feel like community gathering places rather than tourist attractions, and locals who seem genuinely curious about visitors since they don't see many.

Oyem's dining scene revolves around local ingredients and traditional Gabonese cooking, which means lots of cassava, plantains, fresh fish, and bushmeat when available.
