Visa, immigration, and customs information
Visa Requirements
Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.
Gabon requires visas for most international visitors. The country has implemented an electronic visa system for eligible nationalities, while some travelers must apply through embassies. Very few nationalities enjoy visa-free access to Gabon.
Very limited visa-free access to Gabon
Even visa-exempt travelers must have a valid passport, yellow fever vaccination certificate, and proof of accommodation. ECCAS members include Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and others. Verify current agreements before travel.
Most nationalities can apply for an electronic visa online before travel
Cost: Approximately €50-€120 EUR depending on visa type (tourist, business) and duration. Payment is made online via credit card.
The e-Visa must be obtained before travel; it is not available on arrival. Ensure all uploaded documents are clear and meet specifications. Keep a printed copy of your e-Visa approval with you at all times during your stay.
Some nationalities or special circumstances require traditional embassy application
Required for nationalities not eligible for e-Visa, work permits, long-term stays, or if e-Visa system is unavailable. Fees vary by nationality and visa type. Some embassies may require in-person interviews.
Arrival Process
Upon arrival in Gabon, travelers proceed through immigration control, health screening, and customs. The process is generally orderly but can be slow during peak times. Having all documents organized and readily accessible will expedite your entry.

Tips for Smooth Entry
Customs & Duty-Free
Gabon's customs regulations control what goods can be brought into the country duty-free and what items are prohibited or restricted. Travelers must declare all dutiable goods and currency amounts exceeding specified limits. Customs officials may inspect luggage and ask questions about items being imported.
Prohibited Items
- Illegal drugs and narcotics - Severe penalties including imprisonment
- Firearms and ammunition - Unless properly licensed and declared in advance
- Counterfeit goods and pirated media - Subject to confiscation
- Obscene or pornographic materials - May be confiscated
- Endangered species products - Items made from ivory, certain animal skins, and protected wildlife
- Plants and plant materials - May carry diseases; require phytosanitary certificates
- Certain food products - Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy products may be restricted
Restricted Items
- Prescription medications - Carry in original packaging with prescription or doctor's letter; quantities should be reasonable for personal use during stay
- Professional camera/video equipment - May require temporary import permit and declaration; intended for commercial use may need special authorization
- Drones and radio-controlled devices - Require special permission from aviation and security authorities; unauthorized use is prohibited
- Satellite phones and communication equipment - May require registration and permission from telecommunications authorities
- Cultural artifacts and antiques - Export of Gabonese cultural property is strictly controlled and requires permits
Health Requirements
Gabon has mandatory health requirements for entry, primarily focused on preventing the spread of infectious diseases. All travelers must comply with vaccination requirements and should take precautions against malaria and other tropical diseases.
Required Vaccinations
- Yellow Fever - Mandatory for all travelers aged 1 year and older, regardless of country of origin. Vaccination must be administered at least 10 days before arrival. The International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) must be presented at entry and may be checked at hotels and departure.
Recommended Vaccinations
- Hepatitis A - Recommended for all travelers due to food and water safety concerns
- Typhoid - Recommended, especially for travelers visiting smaller cities or rural areas
- Hepatitis B - Recommended for travelers who may have contact with blood or bodily fluids, or require medical procedures
- Rabies - Consider for travelers spending extended time outdoors, working with animals, or in remote areas
- Meningitis (Meningococcal) - Recommended during dry season (June-September)
- Polio - Ensure routine vaccination is up to date
- Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) - Ensure routine vaccination is current
- Tetanus/Diphtheria - Ensure routine booster is current
Health Insurance
Comprehensive travel health insurance with emergency medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Medical facilities in Gabon are limited, especially outside Libreville, and serious medical conditions may require evacuation to Europe or South Africa. Ensure your policy covers medical treatment, hospitalization, and emergency evacuation. Some visa applications may require proof of health insurance.
Protect Your Trip with Travel Insurance
Comprehensive coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and 24/7 emergency assistance. Many countries recommend or require travel insurance.

Special Situations
Additional requirements for specific circumstances.
Children must have their own passport and visa (if required). Children under 18 traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s), including contact information and authorizing the child to travel. If traveling with only one parent, carry the child's birth certificate and consent letter from the other parent. In cases of sole custody, carry legal custody documentation. These documents should be in French or accompanied by certified French translations. Minors also require yellow fever vaccination certificates if over 1 year of age.
Importing pets to Gabon requires advance planning. Dogs and cats need: a valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before travel), an international health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 10 days of travel, an import permit from Gabonese veterinary authorities (apply well in advance through the Ministry of Agriculture), and microchip identification is recommended. Some airlines have specific requirements for pet travel. Pets may be quarantined upon arrival if documentation is incomplete. Contact the Gabonese embassy and your airline for current requirements and restrictions.
Tourist visas typically allow stays of 30-90 days. For longer stays, apply for a visa extension at the Direction Générale de la Documentation et de l'Immigration (DGDI) in Libreville before your current visa expires. Extensions require valid reasons (work, study, family) and supporting documentation. Apply at least 2 weeks before expiration. For work purposes, obtain a work permit and residence visa sponsored by a Gabonese employer. Students need acceptance from a Gabonese educational institution. Overstaying your visa can result in fines, detention, and deportation. Long-term residents may need to register with local authorities and obtain a residence card (carte de séjour).
Business visitors need a business visa (available as e-Visa or through embassy). Required documentation includes an invitation letter from the Gabonese company or organization, letter from your employer explaining the purpose of visit, proof of business registration, and details of meetings or conferences. Business visas may be single or multiple entry. For conducting business activities, ensure you understand local business regulations. Some business activities may require additional permits or registrations. Carry business cards and documentation of your professional credentials.
Passengers transiting through Gabon without leaving the airport international zone typically do not need a visa if continuing on the same or next available flight within 24 hours. However, if you need to leave the airport, collect luggage, or stay overnight, you will need a transit visa or regular visa. Confirm transit visa requirements with your airline and Gabonese embassy, as policies can vary. Ensure your onward ticket is confirmed and you meet entry requirements for your final destination.
If you hold Gabonese citizenship and another nationality, you must enter and exit Gabon using your Gabonese passport. Dual nationals should check requirements with both countries' authorities. Some countries do not recognize dual nationality, which may affect consular assistance. Carry both passports when traveling but use the appropriate one for each country's immigration control.
