Gabon Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources and Gabonese embassies before traveling, as entry requirements may change.
Gabon, located on Central Africa's Atlantic coast, requires most international visitors to obtain a visa before arrival. The country has implemented an electronic visa (e-Visa) system to streamline the application process for eligible travelers. Entry requirements include a valid passport, visa documentation, proof of yellow fever vaccination, and evidence of sufficient funds for your stay. The main international gateway is Libreville's Léon-Mba International Airport, though travelers may also enter through land borders with Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, and the Republic of Congo. The immigration process in Gabon is relatively straightforward but can be time-consuming during peak hours. Officials are generally professional but may conduct thorough document checks. It's essential to have all required documentation readily accessible, including your visa approval, vaccination certificates, and return ticket. Travelers should be prepared for questions about their purpose of visit and accommodation arrangements. French is the official language, so having documents translated or a basic understanding of French can be helpful. Before traveling to Gabon, ensure your passport has at least six months validity beyond your intended departure date and contains sufficient blank pages for entry stamps. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for all travelers over one year of age, and you must present a valid International Certificate of Vaccination. The country's visa policies can change, and processing times may vary, so it's advisable to apply well in advance of your planned travel dates and verify current requirements with Gabonese diplomatic missions.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival in Gabon, travelers proceed through immigration control, health screening, and customs. The process is generally orderly but can be slow during peak times. Having all documents organized and readily accessible will expedite your entry.

1
Health Screening
First checkpoint verifies yellow fever vaccination certificates. Officials may also conduct temperature checks or other health screenings. Present your International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) showing yellow fever vaccination.
2
Immigration Control
Present your passport, visa (e-Visa printout or visa sticker), and completed arrival card. Immigration officers will verify your documents, may ask questions about your visit, and stamp your passport with entry authorization. Ensure the stamp shows the correct duration of stay.
3
Baggage Claim
Collect your checked luggage from the designated carousel. Report any missing or damaged baggage to airline representatives immediately.
4
Customs Declaration
Complete a customs declaration form if carrying items to declare. Proceed through the appropriate customs channel (goods to declare or nothing to declare). Officials may inspect luggage and ask questions about items being brought into the country.
5
Final Exit
After clearing customs, exit the secure area. Currency exchange, transportation, and hotel representatives are typically available in the arrivals hall.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Arrive with patience and allow extra time for immigration procedures, especially during peak hours or if multiple international flights arrive simultaneously.
Keep all important documents (passport, visa, vaccination certificate, hotel booking) in an easily accessible folder or travel wallet, not packed in checked luggage.
Have printed copies of all electronic documents. Internet access may be limited at immigration, so don't rely solely on digital versions.
Learn basic French phrases for greetings and common questions, as English is not widely spoken by immigration officials.
Dress neatly and professionally when going through immigration to make a good impression.
Double-check your passport stamp before leaving the immigration area to ensure the correct duration of stay is noted.
Have local currency (Central African CFA franc - XAF) or USD/EUR for immediate expenses, though currency exchange is available at the airport.
Keep your vaccination certificate with your passport throughout your trip, as it may be checked at hotels or when departing.

Customs & Duty-Free

Gabon's customs regulations control what goods can be brought into the country duty-free and what items are prohibited or restricted. Travelers must declare all dutiable goods and currency amounts exceeding specified limits. Customs officials may inspect luggage and ask questions about items being imported.

Both upon entry and exit. Failure to declare can result in confiscation and fines. Keep declaration forms for departure.
Gifts/Goods
Personal effects and goods for personal use up to a reasonable value (approximately €200-€300 EUR)
New items in commercial quantities or high-value goods may be subject to duties. Professional equipment may require temporary import permits.

Health Requirements

Gabon has mandatory health requirements for entry, primarily focused on preventing the spread of infectious diseases. All travelers must comply with vaccination requirements and should take precautions against malaria and other tropical diseases.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - Mandatory for all travelers aged 1 year and older, regardless of country of origin. Vaccination must be administered at least 10 days before arrival. The International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) must be presented at entry and may be checked at hotels and departure.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Typhoid - Recommended, especially for travelers visiting smaller cities or rural areas

  • Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) - Ensure routine vaccination is current
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria - Ensure routine booster is current

Health Insurance

Comprehensive travel health insurance with emergency medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Medical facilities in Gabon are limited, especially outside Libreville, and serious medical conditions may require evacuation to Europe or South Africa. Ensure your policy covers medical treatment, hospitalization, and emergency evacuation. Some visa applications may require proof of health insurance.

Current Health Requirements: Check current COVID-19 and other health requirements before travel, as these may change. Visit your country's travel health advisory website or consult a travel medicine clinic 4-6 weeks before departure. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for all areas of Gabon. Bring insect repellent, antimalarial medication, and any personal prescription medications in sufficient quantities for your stay. Drink only bottled or purified water and avoid raw or undercooked food.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport and visa (if required). Children under 18 traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s), including contact information and authorizing the child to travel. If traveling with only one parent, carry the child's birth certificate and consent letter from the other parent. In cases of sole custody, carry legal custody documentation. These documents should be in French or accompanied by certified French translations. Minors also require yellow fever vaccination certificates if over 1 year of age.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets to Gabon requires advance planning. Dogs and cats need: a valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before travel), an international health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 10 days of travel, an import permit from Gabonese veterinary authorities (apply well in advance through the Ministry of Agriculture), and microchip identification is recommended. Some airlines have specific requirements for pet travel. Pets may be quarantined upon arrival if documentation is incomplete. Contact the Gabonese embassy and your airline for current requirements and restrictions.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas typically allow stays of 30-90 days. For longer stays, apply for a visa extension at the Direction Générale de la Documentation et de l'Immigration (DGDI) in Libreville before your current visa expires. Extensions require valid reasons (work, study, family) and supporting documentation. Apply at least 2 weeks before expiration. For work purposes, obtain a work permit and residence visa sponsored by a Gabonese employer. Students need acceptance from a Gabonese educational institution. Overstaying your visa can result in fines, detention, and deportation. Long-term residents may need to register with local authorities and obtain a residence card (carte de séjour).

Business Travelers

Business visitors need a business visa (available as e-Visa or through embassy). Required documentation includes an invitation letter from the Gabonese company or organization, letter from your employer explaining the purpose of visit, proof of business registration, and details of meetings or conferences. Business visas may be single or multiple entry. For conducting business activities, ensure you understand local business regulations. Some business activities may require additional permits or registrations. Carry business cards and documentation of your professional credentials.

Transit Passengers

Passengers transiting through Gabon without leaving the airport international zone typically do not need a visa if continuing on the same or next available flight within 24 hours. However, if you need to leave the airport, collect luggage, or stay overnight, you will need a transit visa or regular visa. Confirm transit visa requirements with your airline and Gabonese embassy, as policies can vary. Ensure your onward ticket is confirmed and you meet entry requirements for your final destination.

Dual Nationals

If you hold Gabonese citizenship and another nationality, you must enter and exit Gabon using your Gabonese passport. Dual nationals should check requirements with both countries' authorities. Some countries do not recognize dual nationality, which may affect consular assistance. Carry both passports when traveling but use the appropriate one for each country's immigration control.
